General Learning Goals:
• Teambuilding and collaboration to achieve group objectives. During the marketing research team project, students will work in teams as they gather information, conduct marketing research, and develop a written report and prepare for an oral presentation. The students’ abilities to work in teams will be assessed by peer evaluations.
• Competency in writing for common business scenarios. Teams will prepare and submit one written marketing research project. Part of the score of this project is based on the team’s ability to develop a cohesive report free from grammatical and formatting errors.
• Competency in speaking for common business scenarios. Students will practice their oral presentation skills in classroom discussions as part of the class participation. In addition, teams will prepare and give one marketing research project oral presentation. Part of the score of this project is based on the team’s ability to present the information in a professional manner.
• Problem solving and decision-making abilities through critical analysis, evaluation, and interpretation of business information. Students will demonstrate problem solving and decision-making ability as they identify the problem at issue, assess the key assumptions of the issues, and fair-mindedly follow evidence and reason in decision making through marketing research team project. Part of the score of this project is based on the appropriateness of the team’s ability to solve problems and make decisions.
• Being able to utilize available technology for common business applications. Students will be instructed, practice, and be assessed on utilizing technology for common business applications. In-class and out-of-class exercises will be used as part of technology utilization score. Also, marketing research team project requires students to utilize technology for common business applications.
These general learning goals are among those established by the Dillard College of Business Administration. General learning goals represent the skills that graduates will carry with them into their careers. While assessing student performance in obtaining these general learning goals, the Dillard College is assessing its programs. The assessments will assist us as we improve our curriculum and curriculum delivery.
Course Specific Learning Goals: After completing this course, students should:
• understand the role and importance of marketing research in marketing decision making,
• be familiar with the steps involved in conducting a marketing research project,
• be able to develop a marketing research project, and
• be able to communicate effectively with marketing research terminology.
Student's performance will be assessed using the following elements.
Exams (3): Each exam will consist of multiple-choice and/or short-answer questions. Exams will cover assigned chapters, in-class lectures, speakers, and any other assigned readings. Students are responsible for all assigned textbook material, even if it is not directly discusses in class.
Final exam is optional. You do not need to take the final exam, if you are satisfied with the results of your first three exams. If you are not satisfied with the results of your first three exams, you may take the final exam and use the result from the final exam to replace one of the results from previous exams. All exams will be given only on the scheduled dates. If you miss any one of the first three exams because of reasons other than the authorized absences (see University Class Attendance Policy), then the final exam is mandatory. Be aware that the final exam is going to be comprehensive. Should you decide to take the final exam, please inform the instructor 48 hours before the scheduled final exam date.
Team Project: There will be one marketing research team project. Each student will be part of a team and the number of members in each team will be determined by the class size. You need to find your own team members. The list of team members is to be turned in at 2:00pm, on Wednesday, September 8. The project should follow the steps in the research process specified in Chapter 2 and the information from Chapter 13.
Both a written project and an oral presentation are required. The written project should be typed, double-spaced, with one-inch margin, and between 8-10 pages in length, excluding cover page, table of content, executive summary, exhibits, graphs, appendices, references/bibliography, etc. The recommended font size is Times New Roman 12. The written project is due by 2:00pm, Wednesday, November 17. No late project can be accepted.
The presentations should be planned, rehearsed, and in the 20-25 minutes range (you need to practice your presentation as a group). These presentations are expected to be professional, which means professional dress, professional attitude, and everyone in the group participates. You are required to use PowerPoint for the presentation. Only one 3x5 index card per presenter is allowed for your presentation. You should have backup hard copy overheads of your PowerPoint slides in case something goes wrong with PowerPoint. At the beginning of class on the day of the presentation, the group needs to give the instructor a copy of all visuals to be shown. All team members must be present and share equally in the presentation to earn a grade for this assignment.
Participation: The course is highly interactive between the class and the instructor. Through class discussion, students will have the opportunity to use the concepts, ideas, and strategies presented in class. It is, therefore, extremely important that you actively participate in class discussion. Students should read the assigned material and complete assignments prior to coming to class and be prepared to discuss and ask questions relating to assigned material. In addition, in-class exercises will be assigned on an irregular basis and counted as your participation credits. Participation in class discussion is strongly encouraged.
Peer Evaluation: You will grade your team members on the quality and quantity of the participation in the team by completing peer evaluation forms. You are required to turn in these evaluation forms. If the instructor does not receive these completed evaluation forms from you, then you will lose all of your peer evaluation points. The peer evaluation forms must be completed in private, and given to the instructor in a sealed envelope. These peer evaluations are due by 2:00pm, Monday, November 29. The instructor will use these evaluations to assign grades to individual team members.

The grade ranges are firm. For example, a 79.99% is less than 80%, and therefore, a "C". Thus you can assess the performance required prior to the semester paper and final exam. Semester grades will be reported through normal University channels with no exceptions.
Attendance Policy: Regular attendance is expected and roll will be taken. Upon a student’s fifth absence, that student will be dropped for nonattendance and receive a grade of WF for the course. See the MSU Student Handbook page 39-40, for University Class Attendance Policy.
Missed Examination Policy: Only students with authorized absences (see University Class Attendance Policy) may make up missed examinations. Students must make up a missed exam before they are allowed to return to class.
Syllabus Change Policy:
This syllabus is a guide for the course and is subject to change. Syllabus changes will be communicated in class and/or through the WebWorld.
Grade Appeals: Any student who believes a grade has been inequitably awarded should first contact the instructor who awarded the grade to discuss the issue and attempt to resolve the differences. A student has 30 days following the first day of the succeeding semester to file a written appeal with the dean of the instructor’s college in which the course was taught. Refer to the Undergraduate Catalogue for further details. See the MSU Student Handbook for University policy on grade appeal.
Grade Changes: No grade except “I” may be removed from a student’s record once properly recorded. Changes are not permitted after grades have been filed except to correct documented clerical errors. Requests for error correction must be initiated immediately after the close of the semester for which the grade was recorded.
Awarding and Removal of I: I - incomplete; a non punitive grade given only during the last one fourth of a semester and only if a student (1) is passing the course; (2) has reason beyond the control of the student why the work cannot be completed on schedule; and (3) arranges with the instructor to finish the course at a later date by completing specific requirements that the instructor must list on the grade sheet. A student may remove a grade of I within 30 days by completing the stipulated work.
Final Grades: The instructor does not post final grades. The department staff does not give out grades. Do not call, e-mail, or stop by the department office to ask for grades. Only a student’s instructor can release a student’s grade.
General policies: Exam dates are firm. The student is responsible to have all materials prepared on time. Please feel free to contact the instructor as needed. I want to see everyone do well in this course, but a big part of success depends on the student. I view everyone as an "A" student until proven otherwise. I expect on-time attendance, preparation, participation, and professional effort. Students who have a good attitude and strive to meet these expectations will find me very supportive - I will do whatever I can to help students succeed in this course and beyond.
Assignments: Assignments are due in class at the beginning of class on the specified due date. No late assignments will be accepted. You are late when I finish collecting the assignments. All assignments, except in-class exercises, are to be either computer printouts or typed.
Classroom behavior: All university regulations regarding classroom behavior will be followed. Behaviors that interrupt classroom lectures, discussions, and/or presentations will not be tolerated and will result in a loss of a letter grade. These behaviors include, but not limited to, the following:
• Come to other teams’ presentations late and leave early. You are late if the other teams have started their presentations. Do not come in before the teams finish their Questions and Answers. Once you are in the classroom, do not leave until all teams finish their presentations.
• Come to class late and leave early. You are late to class if I have started the lecture or discussion. If you leave the classroom before class ends, do not return.
• Come to exams late. You are late to exams if there is one student turns in his/her exam.
• Communicate through your cell phones.
