Competency in Speaking Within Common Business Scenarios Students will practice their oral presentation skills in panel discussions on chapter cases from the textbook. In each discussion, students on a panel will prepare a short oral presenta- tion about the case on supervision. Assessment: the students ability to present their perspective will be evaluated and included in the point profile for the course. Class members in the audience will be expected to actively participate in discussions and answer panel questions, as well as ask their own.
Competency in writing about common business scenarios Students will write three (3) two-page essays or reports comprised of commentaries and analyses (not summaries) over several designated cases. Hence, practice of written skills occurs through these assignments. Assessment takes place, as these assignments are worth 10 points each of the total course point profile. Exercise homework, further, will result in practice and there will be assessment of these Items, as they are worth 10 points total in the course point profile. Problem Solving and Decision Making Abilities Through Critical Analysis, Evaluation, and Interpretation of Business Information These critical skill areas are practiced through case applications in diagnostic and analytical skills and in “incident” papers from chapter topics, such as “raising productivity.” They are assessed through the point values given for these assignments and the larger papers. Instruction in this skill area occurs as early assessments are reviewed and discussed with students.
Students will demonstrate ethical reasoning skills within a business environment Instruction in this skill area will take place primarily in discussion of chapters of the textbook. Effective supervision and team leadership require ethical, professional decisions in all areas. Application of this skill will occur through “ethical issues and tips” sections of each chapter. Each of these items will be assessed as part of the total class point schedule.
Students will know how to use team building and collaboration to achieve group objectives In the major topic areas of reaching goals, problem solving, problem employees managing time and stress, groups will form and perform exercises. Brief instruction in technique will be followed with practice and subsequently, assessment.
Students will have an understanding of the influence of global and multicultural issues on business activities Instruction will occur through the sections in each chapter on international aspects. There will be some application of this skill area in exercises and cases. Each of these items. will be assessed through exams as part of the total class point schedule. Students will be able to utilize available technology for common business applications Students will practice this skill area by using word processing, data collection, and the internet. Assessment is reflected in the evaluation of the assignments.
Upon completion of this course you should: 1. Gain an appreciation for the positive and constructive force that supervisors are in making available the goods, services, jobs and income that our society must . have to exist and thrive 2. Display an understanding of contemporary organizational concepts, principles and practices that explain how organizations are formed, how supervisors operate to accomplish goals and functions, and why a supervisor’s success depends on effective use of the principles described in this course. 3. Compare and contrast the prevalent problem solving and decision making techniques. 4. Identify and discuss basic forms of motivation. 5. Discuss the functional duties and ethical responsibilities of supervisors.
This section includes assignments, responsibilities, grading and evaluation. Instructional Method: In order to promote the best opportunity for learning, class Sessions will be highly interactive. We will use rotating discussion panels, short Incidents, case situations, and exercises. Students are expected to attend all classes and to be on time. It will be the student’s responsibility to review any missed assignments with a fellow student or the instructor. Late arrivals are acceptable when based on a solid reason. Early departures should be pre-arranged with the professor. Disruptive behavior will not be tolerated.
Class Participation: Participation in classroom discussions will not only make classes more interesting, it will contribute to the overall learning environment. Class participation and student preparedness, coupled with good attendance, will obviously pay off. {Perfect attendance results in a bonus point on top of final grade. Excessive absences result in a point removed from final total. Chronic non-attendance could result in greater penalty.} In our text, participation takes the form of exercises and cases.
* WRITTEN WORK EXPLAINED (including grading and evaluation) This section includes assignments, responsibilities, grading and evaluation. CHAPTER CASES: these will be assigned as written papers of about 2 pages. There will be 3 required. There should be at least 2 outside references in each paper. Besides the three written papers, there will be a responsibility for participation in PANEL DISCUSSIONS over the cases. Prepared notes should be used and documented contribution will lead to points for participation.
CLASS EXERCISES: These are experiential exercises and there will be several with occasional homework. VIDEO EXERCISES: These will also lead to discussions, some of which may be written up.
Graduate students will assist in class discussion and also make a class presentation.
Written requirements:

If a student misses a regularly scheduled exam, the student must immediately notify the instructor of his/her intention to schedule a make-up exam. The exam dates are tentative and subject to change. All papers have due dates which must be observed.
Keep all the exams, quizzes, and homework until the end of the semester to verify any discrepancy in records. If you happen to be absent on the day the exams or homework are returned in the class, you must come to my office to pick see or pick them up.
* EXTRA READING Some extra reading is required. Handouts about issues, problems and other topics will be provided.
Students are expected to attend all class meetings for this course, following the university attendance policy. (See Midwestern State University Undergraduate Catalog, Vol. LXXV, No. 2, p. 88). Each meeting of the class will run as scheduled. So as not to disturb the class, you are not to walk in and out of the classroom during the class hour except for an emergency. Cell phone activity is prohibited. Distracting conversation between students sitting in proximity with each other is prohibited. Missed classes can be made up through e mail contact with the professor or with other students. REMEMBER: When you miss any class session, it leads directly to loss of performance on tests.
