Course Objectives

 

 

 

COURSE CONTENT:

This course will provide intensive practice in conversation and composition aimed at attaining proficiency in spoken and written Spanish.  There will also be grammar exercises (as needed) aimed at monitoring the student’s use of the language.

COURSE ACTIVITIES:

Students will have an active role in class activities, answering questions, participating in class discussions of assignments and conversing in groups or pairs.  As part of the grade, there is a participation component as noted below.

 

 

 

 

EXAMINATIONS:

There will be short quizzes over the readings and vocabulary in each lesson.  No make-ups, but the lowest 20% of these grades will be dropped.  There will be two exams and a final exam.

Grading Standards

COURSE GRADES:

            The final grade will be based on the following factors:

                                    Homework:  10%

                                    Quizzes:  10%

                                    Exams:  40%

                                    Class Participation:  15%

                                    Final Exam:  25%

Submission Format PolicyNote: You may not submit a paper for a grade in this class that already has been (or will be) submitted for a grade in another course, unless you obtain the explicit written permission of me and the other instructor involved in advance.

Late Paper Policy

HOMEWORK

            Homework is graded on a scale of 1-10.  Homework will only be accepted one class day late, and  it will receive a deduction of 2 points.  Periodically, optional homework will be assigned that  will replace any missed homework assignments or low grades in any homework assignment.


Plagiarism Policy Plagiarism is the use of someone else's thoughts, words, ideas, or lines of argument in your own work without appropriate documentation (a parenthetical citation at the end and a listing in "Works Cited")-whether you use that material in a quote, paraphrase, or summary. It is a theft of intellectual property and will not be tolerated, whether intentional or not.

Attendance Requirements

 

CLASS ATTENDANCE:

You are allowed a maximum of four absences.  You will be dropped from the course without further notice after your fifth absence.


Other Policies

If you carry a cell phone or pager, turn it off. It will not be allowed in class. Text-messaging or the use of non-authorized electronic devices will be prohibited in class.One point off your final class grade will be deducted each time I see you with your cell phone out.


Writing Proficiency Requirement All students seeking a Bachelor's degree from Midwestern State University must satisfy a writing proficiency requirement once they've 1) passed English 1113 and English 1123 and 2) earned 60 hours. You may meet this requirement by passing either the Writing Proficiency Exam or English 2113. Please keep in mind that, once you've earned over 90 hours, you lose the opportunity to take the $25 exam and have no option but to enroll in the three-credit hour course.
