Course Objectives

This course is designed as a first course in computing and is intended for non-CS majors.  The intent is to provide a broad-based knowledge of computers, their applications, and their intrinsic roles in major areas in contemporary society.  The lab provides extensive preparation in MS Office.  

Students will:  

  • Understand the role of computers in society, past and present
  • Gain familiarity with computer terminology across a wide variety of disciplines, building a framework for computer use in a technological world
  • Demonstrate an understanding of lifelong learning and application of computers to everyday problems through software tools and online techniques
  • Learn to apply word processing, spreadsheet applications, and presentation software to business and other real-life problems (MS Office 2007)


 


Course Expectations

Laboratory:

Lab training is through the online system MyITLab, which will be discussed in class. 

Lab assignments are done in the lab, deadlines for completion must be met to receive credit. 

Training assignments (2 per application) are due by midnight on the Sunday preceding the scheduled MyITLab exam covering this application. Due dates are also shown in the MyITLab software. While the due date precedes the exam date, students are encouraged to continue to review (e.g. practice) the training assignments until the time of the exams. Exam tasks are taken directly from the training assignments and diligent practice of the training assignments correlatse highly with success on these exams.

Laboratory Software:MyITLab. This software keycode is available at the bookstore or directly from the publisher. If you plan on buying your textbook online, you must still purchase a separate copy of the keycode for use in the computer labs. This keycode will also be necessary if you plan on downloading the MyITLab software to your personal computer. Do not attempt to use a used keycode for this software. Validation of the keycode is responsibility of the students.

Submission Format Policy

Assignments will be made as scheduled and are expected to be completed by the specified due date. Students in this course must demonstrate their competency in fundamentals math skills through homework assignments and tests.



Note: You may not submit a paper for a grade in this class that already has been (or will be) submitted for a grade in another course, unless you obtain the explicit written permission of me and the other instructor involved in advance.

Late Paper Policy

Grades will be given to the assignments handed in on time. Late assignments will be accepted until one class past the due date. However, they will have their maximum grade reduced by twenty points.  Any assignment turned in after that period or not done will be graded zero points.


Plagiarism Policy Plagiarism is the use of someone else's thoughts, words, ideas, or lines of argument in your own work without appropriate documentation (a parenthetical citation at the end and a listing in "Works Cited")-whether you use that material in a quote, paraphrase, or summary. It is a theft of intellectual property and will not be tolerated, whether intentional or not.

Attendance Requirements

Students are expected to attend all meetings of the classes in which they are enrolled. Attendance is rewarded by participation points in the grading criteria. Lab attendance is mandatory and lab assignments will be performed in the lab.

Disability needs: Instructor must be informed if you are a student with a disability and need accommodations for this class.

Cell phones, etc.: Use of any electronic device is not allowed in the classroom. Exceptions must be approved by the instructor.

Student drops:      If you wish to drop this course you must first contact your instructor. All students-initiated drops must be processed by March 21, 2011.

Assistance:            Please contact your instructor for extra help during this course. This includes class material clarification, expected absences from class due to any personal problem, etc.

Grades will not be posted! Grading system will be discussed in class.

Lecture Tests and Final (3):   10 % (each)

Lab Practice Exams (3):  15 % (each)

Lecture Assignments: 10 %

Lab training:  10 %

Final grading letter: 90 to 100 pts = A, 80 to 89.99 pts = B, 70 to 79.99 pts = C, 60 to 69.99 pts = D, other = F


Writing Proficiency Requirement All students seeking a Bachelor's degree from Midwestern State University must satisfy a writing proficiency requirement once they've 1) passed English 1113 and English 1123 and 2) earned 60 hours. You may meet this requirement by passing either the Writing Proficiency Exam or English 2113. Please keep in mind that, once you've earned over 90 hours, you lose the opportunity to take the $25 exam and have no option but to enroll in the three-credit hour course.
