Applied Research

MSU considers the teaching of field-based professional development courses to
be a living laboratory for the testing and evaluation of educational theory and
thus a useful and valid form of scholarship.  I teach two field-based courses in the reading block every semester at Alamo Elementary School and some semesters at Huey School as well.

I have collaborated with other reading faculty on informal and formal research studies that led to presentations at national conferences:

Research project investigating the interactions between mother and child during shared readings of electronic storybooks. This research is a collaborative effort of the WCOE Reading Department.  Summer 2008 to present.  Research to be presented at the International Reading Conference.

Research on teacher efficacy in Midwestern State University’s pre-service teachers – a collaborative effort with a colleague in the reading department

Research on profiling and positively altering pre-service teacher affect – a
collaborative effort with two reading colleagues:  research presented at IRA, May 2006, Chicago, Il.

Research on the effects that negative reading attitudes pose on teacher
Effectiveness – collaborative effort with two reading colleagues (Presentation at IRA)

Research on pre-service teachers’ reading attitudes and interest with a colleague
in the reading department – Presented at IRA

Piloted a benchmarking project with other WCOE faculty with the goal of improving the internal validity of one of the block professional development courses.

Developed WCOE’s philosophy and mission statements toward NCATE accreditation along with other WCOE faculty.

Worked to align the Developmental Reading/Methods of Teaching Language Arts block three curriculm with TExES standards and to situate block three within program standards (with a reading colleague).
