RESEARCH
Radiation Dose Trends Project Radiation dose trends and radiographer perceptions and responsibilities. This research focuses on the recent change in primary source of radiation exposure to the U.S. population from natural sources to man-made sources and the role and perceptions of the U.S. radiographers in this trend. A national survey is planned early in 2009 with completion and presentation of results in December of 2009.
Quantification of Effective Communication Skills
This research project with the Interdisciplinary Committee will ultimately create an instrument to assess communication skill to use as one admission criterion for prospective healthcare students. A literature review will first be completed and from that an instrument created. It will then be pilot tested regionally in the fall of 2009 with follow-up in spring of 2010.
Community Profile Project
Wichita Falls Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Foundation Community Profile Report. This research project began with an analysis of provided state and county data regarding women's breast health and breast health services. After analysis of this data, two surveys were created to gather additional information from providers and key informants in the service area to fill gaps in the data. From the analysis of all data gathered a report was written summarizing findings, determining priorities for the affiliate, and formulating an action plan to address these priorities over the next three years (2009-2012). The report was submitted to the Susan G. Komen Headquarters on behalf of the Wichita Falls Affiliate March 2009.
Math Anxiety Project
A team consisting of a graduate student and three faculty members (Donna Wright, James Johnston, and I) are assessing math anxiety among entering radiography students. After this initial assessment, we intend to repeat the measure at a later point in the students' progression through the program to evaluate changes. We are also interested in doing inter-disciplinary assessments. We hope to better understand the variables affecting students' career choices and their anxieties about mathematics.
Radiologist Assistant Performance Improvement Project
Second year Radiologist Assistant students and three faculty members (Donna Wright, James Johnston, and I) developed an instrument to collect data in the clinical environments. This will be the first official formal documentation of the emerging role of Radiologist Assistants.
New Radiographic Positioning Landmarks for the Scapula Project
Three Radiologic faculty members (James Johnston, Bob Comello, and I) are researching new radiographic positioning landmarks for the scapula. We have conducted an extensive review of literature, compiled data from surveying students at clinical, performed experiments in the radiology lab with phantoms, and are currently gathering data from the radiology department at United Regional Hospital. Together we have worked many hours on this research project to develop new positioning landmarks. We believe using the new positioning landmarks will improve accuracy, increase the quality of the exam, improve the quality of patient care, and reduce patient radiation dose by reducing repeats.
