InterestsGeochemistry and petrologyI study mass and energy transfer in the Earth's interior, assessing chemical signals in rocks to understand partial melting, crystallization, and alteration processes. I am keenly interested in the nature and origin of high-temperature systems closely associated with magmatism (volcanoes and plutons). I have applied these techniques to diverse systems such as the Adirondack Mountains of New York, the Cascade Mountains of Oregon, the Seridó Fold Belt of Brazil, and the Wichita Mountains of Oklahoma. I encourage student involvement in my research endeavors. I am an active member of MSU's successful UGROW program where undergraduate students engage in research during the Summer I term. Geoscience educationAs a professor, I am eager to explain our current understanding of the Earth. I continue to find novel means of disseminating this often complicated information in the most accessible terms, both in the classroom and to a general audience. Geoscience utilizes numerous sophisticated tools to reveal the planet's history and its current state. My research involves a number of these tools, enriching my ability to speak authoritatively on new and interesting discoveries in geosciences. |
