Pre‑Requisites: BIOL 1134 & 1234; NURS 3203 (may be taken concurrently)
Course Description: The focus of this course is on the assessment of the holistic person as an individual member of individuals, families, aggregates, groups, and society. The role of the nurse in health promotion throughout the life cycle is explored by identifying normal and abnormal findings. Emphasis will be placed on acquiring skills to record client histories, to perform physical assessments, and to communicate specific findings.
Credit Hours: Three (3) credit hours: Two lecture hours and three clinical hours per week.
Learning Experiences: This is a lecture course supplemented with an EVOLVE online course packet. Theory: lecture, case studies, online learning activities, required readings; use of online audiovisuals, review and required online quizzes.
Clinical: Laboratory practice with supervision in the Simulation Center, return demonstration for evaluation, supervised and independent hands‑on practice of assessment skills on a variety of clients throughout the life cycle. Clinical experiences are mandatory. Missing a clinical lab constitutes a clinical failure and all absences must be made up. Please make arrangements as soon as possible with the SIMS staff to make up Lab the same week. If not, make-up for clinical experiences will be available on one make-up day (see calendar). Students must make up any missed Labs. A maximum of 2 Labs may be made up to avoid a clinical failure. In case of an Emergency, students are encouraged to first contact the Simulation Center and request to make up a Lab later in the same week. The Simulation Center will determine if they have space and staff to accommodate the request.

Supplies: Assessment Bag (Blood Pressure cuff, percussion hammer, stethoscope, tuning fork, measuring tape, penlight, watch with second hand). Maroon scrubs with patch and name tag.

Unit Exams will cover learning objectives outlined in the unit(s) of study.
Written Physical Exam Students will submit a complete written physical exam due at the time of their scheduled final practicum. Details will be provided later.
EVOLVE Online Quizzes are intended to prepare students for Lab by reviewing course content prior to Lab and so completion of the appropriate quizzes are encouraged prior to attending the assigned clinical lab at the Sims Center. Collaboration with one another is acceptable but students are reminded that failure to prepare and understand content may impact performance on exams. Online quizzes must be taken during the available times as posted. There will be no exceptions if you miss taking a quiz by the posted deadline. Quizzes cannot be reopened if you miss the quiz. Please plan accordingly and do not wait until the last minute and find out that you cannot get online.
Clinical Log Students are required to save the clinical evaluation forms completed in the simulation lab as well as the practice nurses notes completed during clinical lab experiences in a notebook. Notebooks containing theses items may be requested at midterm and or at the end of the semester for evaluation. Remember clinical is pass / fail.
Clinical Practicum is a demonstration of a systematic assessment performed in a 30-minute period of time. Students may bring a one-sided 5x8 note card to the final practicum to use as a tool during ing. Should a student fail to earn a passing grade on the initial attempt of the clinical practicum, an opportunity exists to re with 2 faculty extenders. Reing is usually the next day or as Lab scheduling permits. Two ers may be present to evaluate at any time during practicum ing for the purposes of assessing inter-rater reliability. Any time two ers observe a practicum the score will be based on the average of the two grades. Further details regarding the practicum will be provided throughout the semester. Students that have failed the didactic portion of the course and cannot possibly make a passing grade will not be eligible to take the clinical practicum.
Vital signs assessment Learners will be assessed on a simulated manikin on the performance of vital signs using a clinical scenario as part of the clinical assessment during the course as well. Results on the scenario will be shared with current and future faculty to assess learner competency as part of the nursing program’s assessment of the learner’s formative learning needs.
Students are expected to pass both clinical and classroom components of the course. Failure in either clinical performance or theory components will result in failure of the course. A clinical failure is recorded as an F on the grade sheets for both clinical and the course room grade.
Instructor Drop Policy
Behaviors that detract from the learning process will not be tolerated. Tardiness will not be tolerated. Excessive talking to classmates during class time will not be tolerated. Beepers and cellular phones should be turned off during all class sessions. Text messaging during lectures is considered unacceptable behavior. Students wishing to use laptop computers during lectures are asked to sit in the last row of seats so as not to distract other students. Children are not to be brought to class per University policy.
Students who demonstrate distracting behaviors will be asked to leave the classroom. If a student demonstrates continuing behaviors that are distracting to his/her classmates, the student will be administratively dropped from the course.
MSU 2010-2012 undergraduate catalog p. 73
Instructor Drop. An instructor may drop a student any time during the semester for
excessive absences, for consistently failing to meet class assignments, for an indifferent
attitude, or for disruptive conduct. The instructor must give the student a verbal or written
warning prior to being dropped from the class. An instructor’s drop of a student takes
precedence over the student-initiated course drop of a later date. The instructor will assign
a grade of either WF or F through the 8th week of a long semester, the 6th week of
a 10 week summer term, or the 11th class day of a 4 or 5 week summer term consisting
of 20 days. After these periods the grade will be an F. The date the instructor drop form
is received in the Office of the Registrar is the official drop date.
A. Lab Requirements:
Students must bring their own lab equipment to assessment lab each week to include a watch for every clinical. Students must wear appropriate attire to enable optimal opportunities for assessment and skill development. Male and female students must wear scrubs with nametag (females should wear a sports bra underneath scrubs to allow for examination of the lungs, heart, chest, abdomen, etc.) and shorts.
B. Absences from Lab
Monday clinical Lab Prep time from 3-4 and labs is part of the program clinical hours and attendance is mandatory. Students who miss any clinical are still responsible for performing each nursing assessment skill presented in this course and will need to attend makeup sessions. Students who miss a laboratory session due to illness or compelling family situations must contact the Simulation Center to seek permission to attend another section of the lab. The Simulation Center will determine if they have space and faculty to accommodate the student request. All students must make up Labs missed and a maximum of 2 Labs may be made up unless extenuating circumstances exist.
C.Absences from Practicum
It is imperative that students notify the Simulation Center within 2 hours of the scheduled practicum time if they will not be in attendance. Failure to do so will result in a grade of 0 for the practicum except under the most emergent conditions. When proper notification has occurred, the student and the faculty will attempt to reschedule the practicum and the student will not be allow to re.
D. Cheating Policy
The BSN Program does not condone cheating in any form and considers it as a serious offense and may result in being expelled from the nursing program. Cheating is defined to include dishonesty. Plagiarism is further defined as "the act of using source materials of other persons (either published or unpublished) without following the accepted techniques of crediting, or the submission for credit of work not the individual's to whom credit is given" (MSU Student Handbook, Standards of conduct, Item 10.) Offending material that may constitute plagiarism includes, but is not limited to, the following, bibliography cards, formal papers, book reports, written nursing care plans, etc. For further information regarding cheating and any subsequent actions to be taken please refer to the policy statement in the BSN Student Handbook.
E. Plagiarism Statement
By enrolling in this course, the student expressly grants MSU a “limited right” to all intellectual property created by the student for the purpose of this course. The “limited right” shall include but shall not be limited to the right to reproduce the student’s work product in order to verify originality, and for educational purposes.

H. Beepers, Phones, and Hats
All beepers and phones are to be muted during both lecture and laboratory periods so that other members of the class will not be disturbed. Students seen sending text messages during class will be asked to leave. Hats are to be removed in the classroom and the lab.
I. Communication in Class
All class participants are reminded to demonstrate respect for faculty and peers by speaking one at a time and listening attentively to the speaker who is speaking.
J. Immunization Requirements
Students must be current in all required immunizations. The Vinson Health Center notifies the Chair of the Nursing Department frequently regarding each student’s level of compliance, and the student must appear on this list as having met all requirements. Failure to do so will result in a grade of incomplete and inability to progress in the program. All immunization documentation is to be taken to the Vinson Health Center. The nursing secretary is available to answer questions related to requirements to include required health insurance.
