Drops, Withdrawals, & Void
|Every institution has its own language for what goes on there and MSU is no different. Understanding a few definitions will make your life at MSU easier--both physically and mentally.|
|DROP - this is what needs to be done if you would like to cancel/drop one or more of your classes (but you will still be enrolled in other classes for the same semester). To do this--go to the Registrar's Office (in Hardin South) and pick up a drop slip and follow the instructions on the form--you DO NOT need to go to the Dean of Students Office to do this.|
There is a short time frame for which a refund can be received for a drop. Check the refund schedule in the current schedule of classes. Students must return their drop slips by the deadline date (published in the schedule of classes) in order to receive a grade of "W". Courses which are dropped after the deadline will receive grades of "F".

|WITHDRAWING - this is what needs to be done if you want to cancel/drop the ONLY class you're enrolled in-or ALL of the classes you're enrolled in. To do this -- go to the Dean of Students Office (in the Clark Student Center Room 168) and someone will fill out a withdrawal form for you. Please be aware that the date of withdrawal will affect your refund and the grade received. Check the current schedule of classes for refund and deadline dates. You DO NOT need to go to the Registrar's Office to do this. |

|INVALIDATION - this is what needs to be done if you want to cancel your registration before classes have even started. To do this -- go to theDean of Students Office (in the Clark Student Center Room 168) and someone will take the relevant information. The refund is 100% for invalidations. Yearbooks, vehicle decals, installment plan fees, loan originations fees, and loan service charges are non-refundable. DO NOT go to the Registrar's Office to do this. |
However, if you decided not to go to school but did nothing to cancel your registration and you did not pay anything, you will be . . .
|VOIDED - this is what is done to your registration for non-payment of tuition and fees by the Business Office. Your registration is CANCELLED--it's as if you never even registered. This is done administratively--you do not go anywhere to fill out paperwork. Voiding is an administrative procedure, it is not an option that is available to you. |
However, you WILL NOT be voided for non-payment if you have applied for financial aid, grants, stipends or scholarships. In these cases, even if you never go to class, you will be counted as enrolled and will owe tuition for the course. At the end of the semester, you will be surprised with a grade of "F" for a class you never attended.
|So--take charge of your transcript. If you register and then change your mind, INVALIDATE before the semester begins, or DROP or WITHDRAW before the deadline to receive a grade of "W". And finally, NEVER ASSUME you will be voided for non-payment. It is your responsibility to WITHDRAW or INVALIDATE properly. Always get a copy of your schedule to verify the classes in which you are enrolled!|
|A word about REFUNDS - the refund period for a dropped class or classes is different than the refund period for withdrawals. Please consult your schedule of classes for the refund schedule.|
