Application Guidelines

Definition of Undergraduate Research

Undergraduate research is an inquiry or investigation conducted by one or more under graduate students, with faculty guidance, that attempts to make an intellectual, creative, or applied contribution to one or more disciplines (adopted by the MSU Quality Enhancement Plan, Spring 2013)


• Major GPA of 3.0
• Overall GPA of 2.75
• The support of two faculty members as potential references
• Attendance at the Research Project Presentations and Roundtable Discussion, October 17, 2013 at 5 PM in Dillard 101
• Expected graduation date no earlier than Spring 2015

If you are accepted in the program, the following is expected from you:

• Enroll in UGROW 4900 in spring 2014 (there are no tuition and fees associated with this course; see class schedule and in summer I. Enrollment in other courses in summer I will disqualify the student of participating in the program
• Attend all planned workshops and meetings
• Complete dedication to your research project (May 27-­July 3, 2014)
• Present results from your project at the 2014 Undergraduate Research Forum
• Present results from your project at professional society, if an opportunity arises
• Enter your project for scholarly competition, if an opportunity arises
• Write a summary of your project and results along with your views of the UGROW experience
• Create a poster to disseminate results from your project
• Participate in all assessment activities

Instructions for completing the application

1. Download the application and complete all fields. Applications with incomplete information will not be considered.
2. After filling out all application fields, save your application as a PDF (Portable Document Format) file with the naming convention firstname_lastname.
3. Obtain an unofficial copy of your transcripts as follows:
   a. Go to
   b. Log into your MWSU account
   c. Access your student records by clicking on student tab
   d. Save your transcript by clicking on file save as Web Page Only (not Web Page Complete)
           i. Use the naming convention firstname_lastname.htm to save your transcript. For example if your name is John Smith, save your transcript as john_smith.htm
4. Send application and the unofficial copy of your transcript electronically to Dr. Rincón-Zachary
(e-mail Write on the subject field of the e-mail “UGROW application.” The deadline for application submission is November 18, 2013.
